Intraocular Injections

Intraocular Injections
Intraocular injections are a highly effective treatment for a variety of retinal conditions, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion. These injections deliver medication directly into the eye, targeting the retina and reducing swelling, bleeding, or abnormal blood vessel growth.

Direct Treatment, Precise Results
Intraocular injections offer direct delivery of medication to the site of disease. This precision allows for maximum therapeutic effect while minimizing systemic side effects. Most patients experience stabilization—or even improvement—of vision over time.

Quick and Comfortable
The procedure is quick, typically taking less than 10 minutes. It is performed in-office using numbing drops and antiseptic preparation. Most patients report little to no pain during the injection, and are able to resume normal activities shortly after their appointment.

Here’s what you can expect during your intraocular injection appointment:

Preparation.
Your eye will be numbed with drops, and the surrounding skin will be thoroughly cleaned. An eyelid speculum is used to keep your eye gently open during the procedure. You may also receive a mild antiseptic rinse.

Injection.
Using a fine needle, the medication is injected into the vitreous cavity—the gel-like center of your eye. The injection itself only takes a few seconds. Most patients feel only slight pressure or no discomfort at all.

Aftercare.
Antibiotic drops may be given to prevent infection. It’s normal to experience mild irritation, a scratchy sensation, or floaters afterward, which typically resolve within a day or two. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress and determine if additional treatments are needed.

Intraocular injections are often repeated monthly or as needed, depending on the condition being treated. With proper care, many patients see significant stabilization of vision and improvement in retinal health.
